Doormat fluke are a rarity, so you can imagine how long the odds would be for a father and daughter to each catch one on the same trip. Yet, that's exactly what happened today on the Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. Veteran fluke angler Dennis O'Brien of South Bound Brook watched his daughter Danielle hook the boat's largest fluke of the season just a couple of minutes into the first drift with a 13.1-pound mega-mat, but later added one of his own with a 10.5-pounder. Danielle's fluke was the first doormat by a female on Elaine B. II, and just barely behind the second largest ever on that boat which is her father's at just one ounce more. Mike Snyder of Highlands caught a limit, and other big fluke were a 7.8-pounder by Dennis Coleman of Short Hills plus a 7.10-pounder for Louis Micieli of Haledon. Elaine B. II will sail early at 6 a.m. Sunday and Monday in order to return earlier and make it easier for patrons to avoid traffic on the way home during the holiday weekend. The Jamaica from Brielle reported finally catching blues on the Saturday night trip, though they were the smaller fish which they also started with Sunday morning before jigging some from 6 pounds up to a 13-pounder by Robert Grant of Syracuse. The Golden Eagle from Belmar jigged 3-to-10-pound blues today, but not enough due to boat traffic which shouldn't be a problem on Monday. It was a long time coming, but I finally plugged my first surf striper of the season around 6:15 despite shallow low tide waters at Avon -- and breaking waves from the swell. Though only a 25-incher, it blasted a Tactical Anglers Bomb Jr. popper and provided a rare striper jump completely out of the water. It was the fattest 25-incher I've ever seen, and I could feel the crabs in its bulging belly. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills fished that area Saturday morning, when he found no bass, but hooked a 23-inch fluke on a small Zoom jig. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant said the Bay Head surf was unfishable due to seaweed, but fluking has been good in Manasqun River and crabbing has been excellent. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported some surf blues up to 7 pounds being caught on mullet, plus a few fluke on Gulp.
