The northwest wind that was stronger than expected created some problems for anglers today, but Capt. Stan Zagleski said it wasn't impossible to deal with for fluking on the outgoing tide from his Elaine B. II out of Bahrs in Highlands. It seemed as if a new body of fluke moved into the bay as there were many more shorts. The high hook had four keepers, and Richard Cavaluzzi of Highlands won the pool with a 5-pounder. The Elaine B. is sailing early at 6 a.m. Sunday and Monday so anglers can get back in time to beat the traffic going home. I joined Capt. Hans Kaspersetz for a couple of hours of light tackle fluke fishing in the rivers, along with Ray Flagiello of Staten Island on Sheri Berri from Baker's Marina on the Bay in Highlands. I boated a couple of keepers in the Navesink right away, but after that it was only a pick of shorts even though the wind was no problem. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into some 2-to-6-pound blues on jigs at the end of the day. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had "wonderful" action with chub mackerel on Friday along with some cocktail blues and 3-to-4-foot sharks. Offshore fishing was tough even before today's wind. Mark Roy of Warren ran out to Hudson Canyon on Thursday, but only one short bluefin tuna was trolled on his Release Me. There were whales out there, and squid were in the chunking slick at night, but no signs of tuna. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall was aboard Frank Criscola's Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club as they fished the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Tournament without success. After starting at the Hudson, they moved to Toms Canyon -- but only broke the ice with a short yellowfin tuna. Di Stefano said there were no positive radio reports during the Thursday overnighter. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills was pleased with his morning's casting as he released two small stripers in Shark River, and then did the same in the surf. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports small blues are in the surf, along with fluke for those casting bucktails tipped with Gulp.
