July 14 Association Report

Although the fluke action in Beach Haven has not been as hot as the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association would like, they are finding things starting to heat up a little offshore.

Captain John Lewis has had the “Insatiable” offshore recently looking for tuna and other big game fish. He fished at the triple wrecks looking for bluefin tuna, but got covered up with 15-pound bluefish. He heard of very few tuna caught that day. The next trip was an overnight one to the canyons. His group hooked several small sharks and a swordfish that ended up in the running gear and broke the leader. The boat was surrounded by tons of squid all night. He trolled the next day and found a pot with mahi. They chunked them for non-stop action for an hour boating nine. The abundance of bait makes Captain John believe the tuna bite will be heating up very shortly. On the way in his party enjoyed detouring around an aircraft carrier doing “touch and goes” with Osprey airplanes. They also saw an immense pod of dolphins with literally hundreds in it.

Captain Dan Skrzat on the “Get Reel” ran to the triple wrecks recently to find a fleet there fishing. The bite was a little slow, probably due to all the boat traffic, but they still managed three bluefin in the 50-pound range. A neighbor of Captain Dan fished the thirty line Monday and killed them with his limit and released another seven fish.

First mate Liane Lopez of the “Miss Liane” reports the boat had its first offshore trip and they had their first white marlin release to begin the offshore season.

Captain Jimmy Zavacky had the “Reel Determined” out to the inshore reefs recently and they ended up with both keeper fluke and black sea bass. On Saturday Captain Zavacky fished the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club and managed a white marlin release and a 39.4-pound bluefin tuna. Captain Jimmy and his son Patrick were one of only two boats to weigh in fish on the slow day.

Captain Gary Dugan of the “Irish Jig” terms the recent fish action pretty much “hot or miss.” Captain Gary has been focusing on fluke with some sea bass also making it to the cooler. Last weekend he had an entry in the 1st annual Terri McGuire MICA Tournament with 42 other boats and weighed in enough fish to take fourth place. He was proud to be part of an effort benefitting the fight against childhood cancer.
