1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

Capt. Tommy Joseph, of Rightaway III from Shark River, has been hammering large porgies since last week, and that fishing was as good as it gets today. The two-fish limits of sea bass are added along with some triggerfish. Sorry about the short column last night, but it's a miracle I got anything out after power was lost in Wall, and traffic became a mess with traffic lights out. I finally found a back way to get to Vinny D'Anton's house in Shark River Hills, where there was power for the internet. What I had saved from the morning got published right on the deadline without any time to check Thursday's results. The Jamaica from Brielle had limits of blues plus loads of chub mackerel today. The blues were caught primarily on jigs. Dan Stivers of Wilmington, De. won the pool with a 3.5-pound mackerel. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a similar report of super blues and mackerel. Phil Silvester of Harrison was on hand for a totally unexpected blast of big blues in Shark River Thursday evening. These were blues like we had in the rivers during the spring, and Silvester was despondent about all the expensive lures he lost on light tackle that's usually perfect for the river. He landed them up to 38 inches on poppers and swimmers. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case just a few hours later when we tried the river at dawn with more suitable surf rods. D'Anton and I hooked up, but the blues were only 6-pounders. He added two more on a Chug Bug, including an 8-pounder, while Silvester only raised one fish. Boat traffic seemed to put an end to a very modest bite. Yet, that was a lot better than what Allen Riley of South Plainfield found at Monmouth Beach. It was a beautiful morning, but there were no anglers on the beach. Riley's only hit came before dawn on a Tsunami Talkin Popper, but it didn't hook up. Even Gulp didn't attract any fluke. Capt. Stan Zagleski said Thursday's fluking was good on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands, but few anglers showed up after being scared off by predictions of thunderstorms. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands is chartered on Sunday morning. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, is stocking live eels. He used one to release a 24-inch striper in Point Pleasant Canal the previous night. Melillo notes that fluking has been good in Manasquan River, and also at the Axel Carlsen Reef's south end. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, says a lady angler has been catching school stripers in the surf on sandworms -- and had a 20-pounder a couple of weeks ago, Matthews is stocking sandworms, and has heard of some kingfish in the Bradley Beach surf. Fluking is good in Shark River, Capt. Dave De Gennaro didn't find any bonito or little tunny last weekend at Barnegat Ridge with his Hi Flier from Barnegat, but will continue checking for those fish which should be showing shortly.  Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports some brown and sand tiger sharks are being released at night. Cownose rays are being spotted. Local docks are producing crabs, snappers and blowfish.
