As this is being written, fluke fishermen are attending captains meetings for the Point Pleasant Elks Tournament and the Grandpa Savino Fluke Tournament at Great Kills. Crabbers don't have tp worry about captains meetings, and don't even have to pay an entry fee to compete in Saturday's The Bunker Challenge at Mantoloking Bridge County Park in Ocean County. To top it off, Jenkinson's Aquarium in Point Pleasant Beach is even providing free bunker for bait as chicken isn't allowed. The contest runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For unformation call 732 506-5122. Capt. Bob Egger had a fine canyon trip on Wednesday with his Spunky II from Toms River as Al Kape of Westfield celebrated his 59th birthday by trolling two 25-to-30-pound yellowfin tuna, eight large dolphin to 20 pounds, and two 200-pound bigeye tuna. A white marlin was raised, but not hooked. Adam La Rosa said canyon fishing has been spotty, as it often is at this time of year before turning around again. He has a special opportunity for active and retired military who would like to fish for free next weekend on the Canyon Runner from Point Pleasant. Chris Durnan has donated the overnighter on the 60-foot Ritchie for either July 27-28 or 28-29. Those eligible should contact La Rosa at adam@canyonrunner.com. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills quickly hooked a big bluefish on his Chug Bug in Shark River early this morning, and handed it off to his grandson Brandon to fight. Though 33 inches long, it was skinny nut still about 8 pounds -- a runaway pool winner on the bluefish party boats that passed by. Phil Silvester of Harrison caught a small striper on an SP Minnow. I not only did nothing there, but was also shut out casting a popper at Spring Lake -- and couldn't even get a hit on Gulp while fluking at Bay Head. There were no party boat reports from Raritan Bay today, but Capt. Hans Kaspersetz said he boated a 33-inch fluke on his Sheri Berri from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. There was a surprising lack of the previously abundant chub mackerel on the offshore grounds today, but the Golden Eagle from Belmar reported good jigging for cocktail blues. The Jamaica from Brielle reported the small blues started slowly before improving -- though there weren't many mackerel. The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant noted the lack of mackerel, but small blues are filling in -- and cownose rays have shown up to provide excitement. Capt. Dave De Gennaro found some more weakfish on the east side of Barnegat Bay again on Wednesday from his Hi Flier out of Barnegat. Jim McHugh of Mendham and his sons Jim and Pat caught four weaks from 13 to 18 inches on grass shrimp along with some short fluke, snapper blues and small sharks.
