The offshore tournament season gets started this week as the Beach Haven Marlin & Tuna Club runs their 47th White Marlin Invitational from July 27 to 30. Boaters can register at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the club before the captains meeting at 7. The Golden Eagle from Belmar ran a bluefish expedition today. The good news is that they found the big blues sought. The bad news is that they wouldn't hit anything thrown at them. Only a couple of blues were caught along with some herring, shad, triggerfish, fluke and sea bass. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant had super chub mackerel fishing today along with some sea bass. That boat is chartered on July 29. Capt. Stan Zagleski took advantage of the fine weather to fish the ocean with his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands. He found more action there, including keepers. Zagleski advises bring a second rod heavy enough to handle 10-ounce sinkers when necessary. Capt. Ryan Bogan said weekend fluking on his Jamaica II from Brielle was good when there was a drift. Ed Nolen of Manasquan had a limit of fluke up to 6 pounds. Jermaine Potter of Trenton boated a 7 5/8-pound fluke, but wasn't in the monthly pool that's led by a 7.6-pounder.  The Gambler from Point Pleasant had a similar fluke report. Kyle Miller of Medford boated an 8 1/2-pound fluke, and young Todd Burger from Freehold bagged four fluke from 3 to 5 pounds The Cock Robin from Point Pleasant reported afternoon fun trips are producing some keeper fluke and a "crazy" sea robin bite.
