Though many anglers got scared off by even a forecast of just a 30 percent chance of a late day thunderstorm, there was some very good fluking Saturday in the ocean. Capt. Stan Zagleski reported much better fluking than on Friday, and with some limits on his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands as conditions were good all day for fishing with no more than an 8-ounce sinker. Bart Major of Howell took the pool with a 6 1/16-pounder. Capt. Ron Santee had a similar report on the ocean fishing from his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands. Chris Botti had his personal best day of fluking with eight keepers up to 4 1/2 and 6 pounds plus lots of 16-to-17-inchers. Brady Bowlin watched his dad catch a keeper among shorts while he had a 7-pounder in his limit. The Golden Eagle from Belmar jigged some of the elusive small blues. The Jamaica from Brielle started out with a surprise -- a 10-pound cod boated by Bilal Johnson of Plainfield. There were also some sea bass and a few ling, before a move resulted in lots of chub mackerel. Friday's trip also ended up with mackerel along with some sea bass, a keeper tog, and some pollock that came up in the slick -- including a 6-pounder for Steve Kirckhahn of Browns Mills.     Nick Kolodiy of Brick was happy just to catch a 17-inch fluke on a bucktail tipped with Gulp for the second day in a row in the Bay Head surf, but said the southwest wind brought in flies which made fishing uncomfortable. That wind kept the flies off as Vinnie D'Anton and I cast from shore into Shark River, but there wasn't much action as I released a 4-pound blue on a Stillwater popper and D'Anton raised another at the same time. Danny Batko of Monroe had a fine family trip to Hudson Canyon on Aug. 5 aboard Letey's Pride from Barnegat as his son Dylan caught a rare spearfish and Jack Lupisella (12) released his first white marlin. They went three for 12 on whites plus the 76-inch spearfish and 20 dolphin.
