Conditions have been generally good for ocean fluking, and even the Shore bluefish fleet is saving trips by fishing for them when blues don't cooperate -- which is most of the time lately. The Golden Eagle from Belmar looked for blues first today, and found some on top. However, they didn't bite and a switch to bottom fishing produced some fluke up to 7 pounds plus sea bass. They plan to do the same tomorrow -- look for blues first before switching to the bottom Capt. Dave Riback reported fast morning action on his Queen Mary from Point Pleasant with mackerel plus some fluke and sea bass. The Gambler from that port has been doing well with fluke whenever there's a good drift. Donna and Bud Brown combined for seven keepers up to a 6-pounder one morning this week. The Jamaica II from Brielle had the monthly pool lead turning over rapidly this week. Bruce Casagrande had a 6 7/8-pound fluke one morning that was knocked off on the afternoon trip when Gerry Giordano of Ridley Park, Pa. boated a 7 3/8-pounder. That leader fell the next afternoon to Bob Bullock with a 7 7/8-pounder. There have been many fluke limits and sea bass up to 4.12 pounds. The Salt Water Anglers of Bergen County Fluke Tournament on Saturday was topped by Mike Ramirez on Little Texas with a three-fluke total of 22 pounds that included the Calcutta winner for biggest fluke of 8.6 pounds. Doug Corbet was second with three fluke for 20.6 pounds, and Bob Cameron finished third at 18.6 pounds. Capt. John Kolias wasn't in the SWABC top three, but had a great trip for Barry Paull of that club as the charter on Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands caught 33 fluke which included 16 keepers from 4 to 6 pounds. Bob Mathews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, reported that Rob Vallone had a fluke limit up to 8.6 pounds on the Ocean Explorer. Fish Stix and Parker Pete had charter fluke limits. Shark River remains loaded with fluke, though few are keepers. Mathews hasn't had many rental boats out this week due to the high temperatures, but Marty Westerfield of Wall caught one keeper among 15 fluke in just an hour of fishing. There are still a few bluefish in the river. I released two to 4 pounds early this morning while casting a Stillwater popper from shore.
