The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into lots of 1-to-3-pound bluefish north of Shark River Inlet again today. They reported those blues were jigged on Run-Off Hammered jigs plus teasers. The Friday afternoon fun trip produced some fluke and sea bass. The Jamaica from Brielle had very good action Friday with chub mackerel plus some small blues during a drift that lasted over 2 1/2 hours. The night trip produced the same species. Capt. Stan Zageski aid this morning's drift in deep water from his Elaine B. II out of Bahrs in Highlands was productive with the onshore wind. Some fares did well with keepers, while others struggled with shorts. John Vanderstad of Pompton Lakes had the largest fluke at about 5 pounds. Frank Huza of Aberdeen tried Lot B at Sandy Hook on Friday evening, but didn't find anything there -- not even snappers.  He then stopped at the Spy House, at the foot of Wilson Ave. in Port Monmouth, and found the waters there to be full of peanut bunkers that were being hounded by 1-to-2-pound blues. Anglers casting from the pier were catching keeper fluke on the peanuts. Shark River was barren this morning for the few anglers casting for blues, but I did have a medium-sized chopper jump over my pencil popper. Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills went to the surf instead, and released three small stripers that hit his Chug Bug. Joe Melillo, at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant, said there are very small  spearing in the local surf -- a bait that could attract cocktail blues.
