Big swells are usually bad news for ocean bottom fishing, and today was no exception to that rule for Capt. Hans Kaspersetz while hosting Tank Matraxia's party from Lyndhurst for a half-day trip on Sheri Berri from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. Kaspersetz worked rough bottoms east of Sandy Hook that had been producing for him, but it was a tough pick today as five fluke were boated along with two sea bass and a ling while Matraxia placed American Littoral Society tags into 15 of the short fluke. There was a fleet spread around that area, but few nets moved during the morning.
Capt. Stan Zagleski got started on the right foot with his Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands, as the first drift produced fluke that included one just under 8 pounds. The next drift was O.K., but after that there was little action anywhere he went -- possibly due to the increasing swell.
The Golden Eagle from Belmar found good quantities of 1-pound blues to the north, and some limits were jigged from those surfacing fish.
Frank Huza of Aberdeen made the long walk at North Beach in Sandy Hook to the tip of the point where he cast to snappers and cocktail blues. An angler casting Gulp was picking small fluke plus the little blues.
Capt. Vinny Vetere of Katfish Charters in Great Kills found striper fishing to be dead on Sunday, but surprised himself by trying some fluking and coming up with a 9-pounder.
Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills waited out the change of tide from shore at Shark River in the morning, and hooked a 23-inch striper on a Chug Bug. However, that was it!
