1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

It's unlikely that any boats sailed today, as most owners were more concerned with preparing for the tropical storm advancing on us. Yet, it was quite pleasant during the short period I fished with light spinning tackle and leftover sandworms from Friday's fishing in Point Pleasant Canal. The smallest hook I could find in the car was a 6/0 circle, but I still released three short tog up to 13 1/2 inches and two very small sea bass within minutes. That may be one of the few fishing opportunities available as the winds increase. The forecast is for northeast winds gusting to 50 knots tonight, followed by up to 55 knots Sunday with 16-to-17-foot waves. Unfortunately, it doesn't get any better after that until possibly on Wednesday night. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall fished the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Offshore Open from Wednesday afternoon to Friday morning aboard Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club. They were trolling in Hudson Canyon for bigeyes with no success while raising white marlin that couldn't be hooked on the heavy tackle. Surprisingly, there were no hits on trolled lures from yellowfins, but all they had to do was stop and throw some chunks to bring yellowfins up. The night bite was red hot on chunks, though the yellowfins wouldn't hit whole butterfish, sardines or even a live squid. They put 21 in the boat, with all in the 50-to-60-pound class.  A big fish was fought for over on hour at night before the hook pulled on what they suspect was a large swordfish. The Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club awards dinner was postponed to Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Manasquan River Club.
