What passed for a tropical storm resulted in a very rough ocean, but didn't interfere with Capt. Dave De Gennaro's weakfishing in Barnegat Bay at all as he had good results from Thursday through Saturday on his Hi Flier from Barnegat. He's been catching weaks from mostly 12 to 15 inches, with a few to 17 inches, on both sides of the bay and both tides. The east side is best for volume while chumming with grass shrimp. The west side, behind Waretown, produces larger weaks on shedder crab. The action is on 6-pound spinning tackle, and also includes short fluke, small sharks, tiny sea bass, blowfish, silver perch, snappers and hickory shad. He's fishing open by reservation at noon through Friday. On Sunday and Monday the plan is to run off to Barnegat Ridge to seek out bonito and little tunny. Capt. Stan Zagleski figures the ocean remains too rough for fluking, and will hold off for a couple of days before getting started again with Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. Capt. Ron Santee had hoped to move his Fishermen from the storm anchorage back to Atlantic Highlands, but the clearing northwest wind was too strong. He'll look at conditions before deciding when to resume fishing. Vinny D'Anton was keeping Shark River honest during the storm, but hasn't raised anything from shore in coffee-colored waters. Point Pleasant Canal waters have been clear , though there haven't been any striper or bluefish reports. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, says some anglers fishing with green crabs have caught lots of blackfish, including an occasional keeper. I've been making a brief attempt at the slack with light tackle and sandworms, but the volume of juvenile sea bass is hard to get past with soft baits. I did release three blacks up to 13 inches this morning. Any size tog is a challenge to keep out of bottom with light tackle.
