Wednesday's northeast blow created a rough ocean that seemed to slow Friday's action. Both the Golden Eagle and Miss Belmar Princess had good readings but only a few jumbo blues on bait -- though the latter also loaded up with chub mackerel. The only fluke report from the north came from Tank Matraxia and his Lyndhurst crew who fished on a Cobia out of Keyport. The skipper pulled out all the stops, running far east in a rough sea to the Atlantic Beach Reef, then to the Rockaway Reef, the Whistle Buoy, and the Fisherman Buoy before finishing off Keyport without a single keeper fluke. Matraxia placed ALS tags in just six short fluke, two sea bass and a bluefish. Emil Pavelac had the only keeper with a snagged porgy. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar experienced slower fluking in the swell, but had several large fish including the new seasonal leader of 9 3/4 pounds by Mr. Walker. who's in line for $4,400. Surfcasting was impacted by the rough ocean fueled by a 15-20-mph east wind. I switched to light tackle blackfishing in Point Pleasant Canal, but Allen Riley of South Plainfield checked Sea Bright in hope of finding a shot at little tunny as occurred the previous morning. There was no sign of them in the rough surf, and Ed Riley of Edison had the only fish with a snapper blue. There's been no sign so far of the canyon tuna that were abundant before the storm. The Jamaica from Brielle had 300 dolphin up to 16 pounds on Tuesday's canyon trip, but only two tuna. The Wednesday to Thursday run started with a few dolphin plus an outstanding 42-pound wahoo boated by Ted Fliedner of Santa Clara, Ca. However, there were no tuna at night, and only two white marlin up to 90 pounds hooked at the same time around 5 a.m. A couple of spots may be available on Sunday's 5 p.m. trip.
