The trawler Austin put up a good fight, and took a long time before sinking today on the Axel Carlsen Reef. There'll be more about this in tomorrow's blog. Fluking has been tough to the north, and the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands switched to porgies today with good results. Catches ranged from 1/2 to full buckets, and several scup were in the 3-pound class. The Eline B II from Highlands will not be sailing on Thursday, but will then finish up the fluke season from Friday through Sunday. There's been much better fluke action well off the Shore. The Jamaica II from Brielle had many limits during Monday's Marathon trip. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar reported the best day of the season for big fluke weigh-ins. The Ocean Explorer had fluke of 7 5/16, 9 1/4 and 9 1/2 pounds. Private boat catches included fluke of 8 9/16 and 8 3/4 pounds. Miss Belmar Princess ran to the north for a good first drift with big blues, but couldn't repeat that action. They finished up with small blues to the north. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills made it three days in a row with a legal striper from the Spring Lake surf. He beached a 28 1/2-incher during the morning low tide on a Chug Bug. SAW 18 WHITES MONDAY IN 8 HOURS 2 Dates Left on 48 Viking Until Next Year 1 Dates Left on 60 Ritchie Until Next Year   Jackson Hsieh & Canyon Runner 1st & 2nd Place     Check out the New DEEP Gloves (Seen below) So Far So Good - first fish leadered was a Tournament Winning 264# Big-Eye - Not a Bad Start! ********************************* Now for the Reports.............  In our last tournament of the year - the Manasquan River Marlin & Tuna Club Offshore Open - we not only saw a first place win with a 264.5 pound Big-Eye caught on the troll - we locked up second place with a 201.5 pound Big-Eye caught on the chunk and these 2 fish also took the stringer calcutta and combined winnings was just over $156,000. It was a book end win as we saw our 2016 Tournament Season start with a win in our first tournament of the year, the Warriors for Warriors Shark Tournament, and a win in this one - our last tournament of the year.     In just our third year fishing the Manasquan River Offshore Open we've seen this tournament grow to what is now flat out a must fish tournament. Think about it - for only $4,100 in entry fees we were able to walk away with just over $156,000. This also happens to be the third year in a row we placed in the money and the second year in a row we took 1st Place - so yes I'm a little bias towards this tournament but facts are facts and it's now a big money tournament for not a big dollar entry free and we can't wait to fish it next year. My congratulations go out to all the club members but I want to personally thank Jim Carton for putting on a great event - thanks Jim!   As for the Canyon Runner TEAM - what can I say but to personally thank, and express my sincere gratitude, to be surrounded by some of the best in the business and that to a man we all can't wait until next year's tournament season! First congratulations to Capt. Deane Lambros on another great job in all aspects of this trip including the sight unseen work on the dock and in the engine room - it's not all about the catching - it's about what leads up to it. Great job of course to both our Co-captains Mike Zajac and Craig Angellini - their efforts were instrumental in this tournament as it was, and always is, a huge team effort. Most importantly congratulations to Jackson Hsieh - easily one of the top 3 anglers we ever have on our boats as he put another hurting on another tournament winning fish and to his brother Frank who got in on the action as well. Additionally, reiterating Capt. Deane's post earlier this week - I would like to thank Captain Phil Dulanie, Captain Kevin Muller, and Captain Carl Gieger for all of their efforts keeping our team and the Canyon Runner boats in top form 24/7/365. As for more recent efforts offshore it's been back to a slow pick of fish and a hard core effort to put together a box full of meat. 4 trips this week saw 4 wahoo, 14 yellowfin, blue marlin, couple whites, sharks and more mahi than your heart desires. Not the fishing we had during the tournament week but not bad if you like your canyon fishing to be a variety. Looks like we'll get out Friday afternoon or early Saturday and then should be out for a nice long streak.
