Capt. Dave De Gennaro saw a bg improvement in Barnegat Bay weakfishing today from his Hi Flier out of Barnegat. Only one weak had been caught Thursday afternoon, when the skipper had to move to the west side to bail out with blowfish. He was back to chumming with grass shrimp on the east side this afternoon, and didn't do a thing until the current started running hard and big snapper blues moved in before two hours of non-stop weakfishing. The weaks ranged from 13 to 16 inches. Since it doesn't look good for offshore, De Gennaro will be running open for the weakfish. The fluke season is own to the last two days. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported a good day with some limits and a 7-pound pool fluke. Don Marantz fished with Paul Haertel out of Toms River, but they only caught shorts, sea bass, and 2-pound blues  from the previously productive Klondike to 10 wrecks in deep waters. At Atlantic Highlands, the Fishermen shifted over to porgies on Wednesday, and had full bucket catches today, including several in the 2-pound class plus a 3.4-pounder for Jeff Johnson. The Angler remained on the fluke beat while releasing sea bass that included a 24-inch, 6 1/2-pounder. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into small blues today, with steady action on Run-Off Hammer jigs except around 10:30. They saw big blues, but those fish wouldn't hit.  Miss Belmar Princess ran to the north for small blues, but also took a shot offshore where some 5-to-6-pounders and up to 9 pounds were jigged. Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall wasn't aboard, but reported that the Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club fished Wilmington Canyon on Wednesday. The hot white marlin bite there had cooled off, though they went four for four on whites and jumped off a blue marlin. Di Stefano knew that longliners are running about 200 miles to the east to catch tuna. Joe Blaze of Brielle fished this morning with Hank Matri n MatriArk as they quickly tolled a 5-pound bonito on a Clark Spoon at the Axel Carlsen Reef, but had no more hits in 73-degree waters. Very small blues were on bait outside Manasquan Inlet. At Brielle, the Paramount will be running the Friday and Saturday night 7:30 p.m. bluefish trips for the Jamaica that will be in the canyons over the weekend. Vinny D'Anton of Shark River Hills plugged two very small blues in Shark River before checking the Spring Lake surf where there was nothing doing on a low tide. I only made a couple of casts at Bay Head due to the big swell on a low tide. The Jersey Shore Boat Sale & Expo is running through Sunday at First Energy Park in Lakewood.
