The Golden Eagle from Belmar returned to the same area where big blues had been before the northeaster, and got into them again. No volume was specified, but those boated were from 10 to 18 pounds. The Golden Eagle went to the canyon this afternoon, but will resume bluefishing on Tuesday. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina, has been fishing at night, and caught a 14-pound striper "in the river". He said an angler caught two bass, one a keeper, in Shark River Inlet this morning on an SP Minnow. Capt. Ron Santee fished the ocean for porgies with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands, and reported those fish turned on when the current ran hard. A few blowfish and sea bass also hit. The surf remained rough, even though the east wind dropped down. I made a short effort in Point Pleasant Canal with old sandworms and released six small tog on light tackle as well as an equal number of little sea bass. I didn't see any keepers caught, but lots of short tog were being returned. Monday looks good for fishing, but more gusty northeast winds are forecast from Tuesday on. Matt Slobodjian reports from Jim's Tackle in Cape May that "It was a pretty dismal week weather wise, but we still had some action on the surf with blues and small bass. The mullet were pretty thick around the rockpiles at Cape May Point, and the beachfront in town. There were even a few nicer weakfish and some croakers around early in the week. We did see the first couple of red drum this week. One was caught and released on the Point and another was caught in North Wildwood. The four-hour party boats are still making trips to the rips and the bay for small blues and weakfish and doing pretty well on the nicer days. Offshore there was a good tuna bite earlier in the week in the Wilmington and Baltimore canyons. We have quite a few boats going Sunday. Hopefully they'll find the fish snapping."
