Party boat bluefishermen who suffered through a summer with only cocktail blues among chub mackerel most of the time can make up for that now that jumbo blues have been in solid on the edges of the Mud Hole. Both the Golden Eagle from Belmar and Miss Belmar Princess have been into lots of 10-to-18-pounders the last two days on both on jigs and bait. The latter reported bait was best today, with four to five were on at a time at first -- before it got better. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant also reported hot jumbo bluefish jigging. Saturday's weather looks great, but skippers may have to cancel Sunday and Monday when gusty northeast winds are predicted. Capt. Ron Santee said porgy fishing was picky today on his Fishermen from Atlantic HiHighlands as the fish wouldn't bite consistently even when he tried chumming. Instead of full bucket catches, the more successful fares had 12 to 20 porgies. There was one day like that last week, but the porgies were feeding heavily again by the next day. Thursday night's striper trip was very good for the second night in a row, with bass up to 20 pounds on live eels. Those trips are run from Monday to Saturday from 6:30 to 12:30. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had good porgy fishing today, while anglers using green crabs could also bag the one blackfish presently allowed.  had some computer problems last night which resulted in my first draft being published instead of the revised one that included info about the jumbo blues, the night striper bite, and a report from Capt. Chris Di Stefano of Wall who fished Thursday aboard Crisdel from Brielle Yacht Club. Capt. George Steller, Jr. put owner Frank Criscola and his bother Tony into stripers trolled on umbrella rigs at Shrewsbury Rocks. One bass was a 30-pounder, and there were a couple of 12 to 15 pounds plus others in the 30-inch class.  Di Stefano said they also saw schools of adult bunkers not far from shore. Allen Riley of South Plainfield found a rough, but fishable, surf in Sea Bright this morning. He used heavy lures to get into good water, and lost a striper on a 2-ounce chrome Gibbs Minnow before catching small blues on the A.O.K. PB-40 metal. Point Pleasant Canal is producing some stripers in the dark. Joe Melillo caught a couple Wednesday night on live eels which he has in stock at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant. Blackfishing remains very active during the day even though the vast majority are shorts. It's great sport on light tackle with green crabs or soft baits.
