Though a condo association put up new official-looking regulations severely restricting access and fishing, Joe Melillo at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant reports that the N.J. DEP has confirmed that there is no change in the federally-mandated public access throughout the canal. Point Pleasant officials and the Police have been informed, and anglers can no longer be harassed. This is a big win for the public, but anglers must be good citizens and carry out any trash of their own plus any left by slobs. Local weather is changing for the worse. Small craft warnings are up, and will go to gale warnings on Sunday. As a result, most boats will not be sailing Sunday -- and also possibly on Columbus Day. That's too bad, because the Golden Eagle from Belmar had "super" bluefishing for jumbos up to a 20-pound pool winner plus a couple of bonito up to a 12 1/2-pounder. In addition to cancellation of the day trip, the Sunday evening tuna trip is also off. Miss Belmar Princess reported seven to eight jumbo blues from 8 to 18 pounds on at a time this morning. Bait was most effective. The Prowler 5 from Atlantic Highlands had good porgy fishing on the N.Y. side today, but won't be sailing Sunday as there's no place to hide from strong northeast winds.
