Tony Arcabascio is happy to report the first 50-pound striper reported locally since the spring was boated Sunday on his #4 Tony Maja bunker spoon trolled by Capt. Ken Gallop of Big Kid from Brielle Yacht Club. It was hooked and released at Shrewsbury Rocks along with some smaller bass.
Arcabascio notes that big bass are also being trolled regularly on his spoons by boaters out of Barnegat Inlet. Though there are bunker schools up in that area, live-lining hasn't been successful so far.
Capt. Joe Bogan can't wait for the sea bass season to open on Saturday, when he'll run an extended open trip at 5 a.m. with his Jamaica II from Brielle.
Vinny D'Anton of Wall released two 26-inch stripers that hit his Chug Bug early this morning in the Spring Lake surf. I joined him just after he released the second bass when he uttered the kiss of death -- "The fish are here". Just as occurred the last time he said that, there wasn't another bass raised. The big swell continues, but the surf is clear and fishable.
My wife says I still have too much fishing and boating tackle in the garage, so I'm having another garage sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1552 Osprey Ct., Manasquan Park (Wall) 08736.
