Bigger bunker resulted in bigger bass today in Raritan Bay. Capt. Rob Semkewyc, of the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, said the bass were pushing adult bunker to the surface, and the largest boated weighed 27 pounds. There were also others of 20 to 24 pounds as everyone went home with a keeper. Unfortunately, the weather forecast is poor for Tuesday, with rain arriving after midnight and small craft warnings up for northeast winds. Semkewyc may shape up for tomorrow's trip in hope that the weather will turn out to be fishable. Call him by 9 p.m. to determine if it would be worthwhile to make the trip. Capt. Ron Santee had a similar report from his Fishermen out of the same port. There was good surface action until boat traffic increased, and the biggest bass went 18 pounds. There were no reports from the Shore ports today, but I got a report at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant of stripers being caught on poppers right outside Manasquan Inlet early in the morning. There was also some scattered surf action. Vinny D'Anton of Wall started on the Bay Shore, but ended up checking out the coast before getting into peanut bunkers at Manasquan. The bass under them wouldn't hit lures, but snag & drop produced some up to 29 inches.  Frank Conover caught eight bass on poppers early in the morning. Allen Riley of South Plainfield had a different story from Sea Bright. The surf was ideal, with a temperature of 58 degrees, but there was no bait and no hits on any artificial. Capt. Russ Binns of Toms River put his crew into three stripers up to a 30-pounder full of bunkers while live-baiting off Asbury Park with his Mar-Lin on Sunday morning, but did better by leaving the mob scene to troll bunker spoons a couple of miles offshore for steady action on both bass and jumbo blues. Leif Ericksen has been doing very well in the Deal surf with his peanut bunker fly. He released five keepers to 33 inches plus three shorts on Saturday evening, before four bass Sunday morning and releasing two of 29 and 34 inches.
