Mark Roy of Warren got a lot of fighting time in today as we fished with Capt. Jon Cooper on his 35-foot Contender, Dive-Version, out of Miami. We used Sabicki rigs to jig lots of herring for live bait while also catching many other small species in the Stiltsville area. It didn't take long to get out to the edge of the Gulf Stream, but there was no action for the live herring fished under kites until later. A sailfish managed to tear a bait off without getting hooked before Roy saw what he thought was sail crash a bait. Yet, that fish almost dumped the reel -- behaving more like a large tuna than a a typical 40-pound sailfish. Cooper was running after that fish when it finally stopped just before the 20-pound mono broke. A live herring being sent to bottom in 200 feet never got there, and I fought a fish that came to the surface and turned out to be a yellowfin tuna of about 25 pounds. Not big by northern standards, but an unusual catch off Miami. The bottom rod bent over again, and Roy started another fight that lasted about 20 minutes with something very big before the 40-pound mono leader broke just as he was making good progress with the mystery fish. oy then hooked a sailfish that produced three jumps and was on for awhile as I caught a king mackerel on the bottom rod before the sail somehow got rid of the circle hook. We also released a double of large little tunny, and Roy finished up with a dolphin. Those interested in trying this interesting sport can contact Cooper at 305 724-6870.
