Local anglers are hoping for signs of the first bluefish that provided great shore casting last spring, but Mark Roy of Warren wasn't happy this morning when he heard that big blues had shown up off Miami. Jigging for the threadfin herring that have been the prime bait for sailfish was tough, and we weren't looking forward to losing those baits to choppers as well as cutoffs on mono leaders. Though some boats were reporting problems with blues that are typically, big but with thin bodies when they make a rare showing off southeastern Florida, Capt. Jon Cooper managed to avoid those blues altogether.  Roy, Chris Fahmie of Hollywood, Fl, and I ended up enjoying a great day of sailfishing with the live herring under kites from Dive-Version as we released a perfect eight sails out of eight hits. Roy managed to get Billfish Foundation tags into several of those sails, including my first which the skipper estimated at an unusually large 80 pounds -- more like the size of a Pacific sailfish. Roy also added a dolphin and a blackfin tuna. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had an encouraging blackfish trip today despite a still large swell. It wasn't fast fishing, but some fares caught two to three keepers plus shorts. Unfortunately, they won't be returning tomorrow due to a forecast of south winds with gusts up to 45 mph and rain.
