Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported Friday was the best day of the year so far with lots of bait in the surf and mostly 12-to-24-inch stripers on the feed along with some keepers. The bait includes both adult and peanut bunkers plus herring -- and the reports are from Seaside Park to Island Beach State Park. Stripers were biting in Raritan Bay this morning, but not for everyone. Capt. John Kolias ran a crew trip with his Reel Fun from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands, and their trolling produced two bass in the teens that were kept while some others were released. Capt. Ron Santee reported a few bass on clams and fresh bunker from his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands. He noted that the water temperature was only 47 to 48 degrees, and has to come up a bit before the bass really turn on. With record air temperatures that shouldn't take long. The Golden Eagle and Miss Belmar Princess from Belmar, and the Jamaica from Brielle, are all on a daily schedule for ocean stripers, but there were no reports by 6 p.m Tagged Fish from Highlands did get into some stripers on jigs this morning before picking some blackfish. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had a pick of tog on Friday that included one over 10 pounds. A slow start today improved during the day. The Big Mohawk from that port picked away at blackfish today, including some "nice" fish. They won't be sailing on Easter Sunday, but will be back at it Monday at 6 a.m.
