You know the ocean is rough when Betty & Nick's Tackle in Seaside Park calls the surf "practically unfishable"! As a result, party boats haven't been sailing this week. However, all that should change on Thursday. Perhaps the ocean run of stripers will finally turn on, and blackfish will resume biting while moving closer to shore.  The best bet remains the protected waters bite of big blues in Barnegat Bay and Manasquan River. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reports anglers who braved Tuesday's rains to fish in Barnegat Bay caught lots of 8-to-16-pound choppers on poppers, SP Minnows, and bunker. Raritan Bay stripers can be fussy, but trollers have generally been doing very well with deep-divng plugs. Capt. John Kolias hasn't been seeing any sea lice on bass caught from his Reel Fun out of Twin Lights Marina in Highlands while trolling in the bay. That indicates those bass are Hudson River stock rather than coastal migrants from the south.  There's also been lots of wind this spring on the east coast of Florida. Capt. Charlie Fornabio, formerly of Belmar, reports from Wabasso as follows: "April has lived up to its reputation as being the windy month. E and SE winds have dominated the weather pattern which has limited me to fishing in the Indian and Sebastian rivers. Snook continue to be my  main focus with the best fishing around daybreak. DOA Bait Busters have been my GO-TO lures pre-dawn and then switching to Rebel Jumpin' Minnows and Yo-Zuri Hydro Pencils as it gets light enough to see your plug on the surface. When it's full daylight we move to fishing live pilchards and threadfin herring in and around the Fort Pierce Inlet and select spots in the river. Big jacks are roaming the inlet as well as a few really big bluefish. Some good sized sea trout are around the spoil islands and flats N of the inlet.  The snapper fishing is good in the deeper cuts, which saved me on many of those windy days. Sheepshead have moved back out to the inshore reefs and are rare now in the river. Pompano are still around, but it's hit or miss as usual. I did have some good days in the Sebastian River catching small tarpon on DOA Bait Busters and also on fly.Hopefully the winds lay down and we get a chance to get outside the inlet soon.Capt Charlie Fornabiofishingverobeach.com772 360-7647
