In the usual rush to get out the print column Thursday evening, I didn't pick up my typo on the new NMFS Angling category bluefin tuna regulations. Private boaters only get two school bluefins ( 27 to less than 47 inches plus the one large school/small medium (47 to less than 73 inches). Only party and charter boats get three schoolies plus the larger bluefin. There was better news today from Raritan Bay party boats. The Sea Hunter, Fishermen and Prowler 5 all reported good action with schoolies plus some keepers on bait. The Fishermen had a high hook of five, and a 16-pound pool winner. The Sea Hunter also released a small black drum. The ocean striper news wasn't as good. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported continued "slow" striper fishing, but did get their first bluefish of the season. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar had good blackfishing early and late when the current wasn't too strong. Everyone caught, and there were some limits. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reports better bluefishing -- though it's still not wild. A few short stripers are being caught on bait in the surf. Though bluefishing has been good in Manasquan Inlet at times, Bob Correll of Bay Head said the Friday evening bite was off. He went up the river where his wife, Mary Agnes, hooked a huge blue that ran off lots of line before getting off. Unfortunately, that was it.
