Sportfishermen are generally happy today after the ASMFC, at their  meeting in Alexandria, Va., voted down a motion pushed by commercial interests in the Chesapeake Bay states to increase the striped bass quota by about 10 percent. Surprisingly, N.J. voted with Va, Md., De., and the PRFC in favor of the increase. The migratory run of stripers from the south has been well below the standards of the years following the recovery of the fishery, -- and this year's run has been both very late and almost nonexistent so far. In recent years, it's been the healthy Hudson River stock that's been bailing out anglers in the Metropolitan area.  I noted in last night's blog that the area off Island Beach State Park was overdue on big bass that are normally trolled in 60-foot depths there by late April. No sooner was that blog published than Capt. Dave De Gennaro called to report he'd trolled a 34-pounder on a Tony Maja #4 bunker spoon Monday afternoon from his Hi-Flier ou of Barnegat. That was the only hit, but it should encourage other trollers to give that area a try. The Golden Eagle found plenty of bunkers during today's trip from Belmar, and there were stripers rolling in them -- but those bass wouldn't hit anything, including snagged bunkers. They did end up with some bluefish. Capt. Bobby Bogan didn't get out today with his Gambler from Point Pleasant, but said he got into blues in front of the inlet yesterday. There were no reports from Raritan Bay today, but blues moved in yesterday and should keep anglers busy while waitng out stripers. Phillip Sciortino, at the Tackle Box in Hazlet said his nephew, Billy Phillips of Monouth Beach,  "has been having fun with GIANT BLUEFISH on swimming plugs in the river!"
