The annual Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament will run Sunday at Island Beach State Park. With bluefish still being abundant in the surf, there should be lots of entries for the many fishing tackle prizes. Be sure to obtain fresh bunker for bait. See last night's blog for details. Big blues were back in the picture for Shore party boats. The Jamaica reported a mix of sizes up to 15 pounds. The Golden Eagle from Belmar picked away at blues all morning, but then got into big bass attacking schools of bunkers in the afternoon as a 40-pound bass was boated and others lost. The Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands had a shot of bass action though only four out of a dozen were keepers. After that was over, a few big blues were added. Though shore fishermen haven't been doing well with blues in Manasquan River,  Bob and Mary Agnes Correll of Bay Head had hot afternoon action on both poppers and swimmers from their Boston Whaler. Joe Melillo weighed in a 20 1/8-pound striped bass at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant that was baited at night in the local surf by Terry Martuscelli of Brick, while Mike Commune from Brick did even better with a 25-pounder.
