The surprisingly strong east wind made it tough on both boat and shore fishermen Saturday, but it's supposed to be lighter on Sunday in time for the Governor's Surf Fishing Tournament at Island Beach State Park. Bluefishing was still good there Saturday, primarily on bunker. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park has also weighed in a few surf stripers lately, topped by a 22-ounder at IBSP by Rob Kominsky on bunker. Sorry about the headline on yesterday's blog which indicated the contest was "tomorrow", though the text was correct. Check Thursday's blog for details. Saturday's weather prevented Capt. Erwin Heinrich from fishing in the ocean with his Scales N Tales from Twin Lights Marina in Highlands. He intended to fish live bunkers for the 40-pound stripers that had been the target since last week, but was also bringing a couple of 50-pund outfits after having seen bluefin tuna attack those bunkers this week in just 65-foot depths.  Earlier in the week, he was trolling a Rapala when a fish started stripping line faster than any striper could do. A tuna was suspected, and that was confirmed Friday when one was briefly hooked and another followed a bait to the boat. The latter came out of the water -- and was no ordinary bluefin, but rather a giant of over 500 pounds. Though giants have been seen chasing bait close to shore late in the fall, I've never heard of them so close at this time of year. There was a showing of giant stripers for some boaters Friday afternoon. The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a 40-pounder from among bass attacking a school of bunkers. Miss Belmar Princess got one after picking blues when Jordan Zigmont of Telford, Pa. boated a 46-pounder. Bob Matthews, at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina said the Fishmonger boated a bass of 55 inches. Unfortunately, there were no such reports today as the boats struggled just to jig some blues of all sizes up to 14 pounds. The east wind also prevented a repeat of a showing of small blues in the Bay Head surf, but I managed to tempt a 19-inch striper in Point Pleasant Canal on a Tsunami Shad. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant found some life in his town's surf -- though only his girl friend could reach them with the long rod and a heavy popper. Maren Toleno of Manahawkin released about a dozen fish consisting of medium and large blues plus a 33 1/2-inch striper. Capt. Rob Semkewyc wasn't expecting much this morning, but ended up with the best catch of keeper and short bass on Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands this season.
