Capt. Tom Savastano returned from Saturday's tuna trolling in the vicinity of Hudson Canyon with reports of bluefins up to 100 pounds plus a bigeye that size on Double Down out of Manasquan Inlet even though it was rough both ways. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported good jigging for blues from 2 to 8 pounds. They viewed some spectacular whale action on Saturday. Capt. Stan Zagleski was delighted with the great weekend weather for fluking on his Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. There was a decent pick of fluke on some spots, and very few on others. The one positive sign was bait readings in areas where there had been none a few days earlier. The South Jersey Marina Shark Tournament still hasn't posted final results of their Shark Tournament, though it appears that the 310-pound mako caught the first day held up. The weekly report from Matt Slobodjian at Jim's Tackle in Cape May follows: "The striper bite from the surf really slowed up this week We didn't weigh any, and only heard of a few shorts caught. The little schoolies are in the backwaters and will show up in big numbers with a little chum around creek mouths and bridges. There are almost no keeper fish with them, but they provide  great catch and release fun --especially for the kids. If you're going to try this, please use in-line circle hooks so the fish aren't gut-hooked. Weakfish are still on the Point jetties. They can be taken on light bucktails with a worm trailer or by floating bloodworms from a bobber. Tom Wismer of Lancaster Pa.weighed in a 6.77 lb. trout from the point on Thursday that he caught floating worms. Tom had six more he released, and was there at sunrise to about 9 am. The early bite seems to be the best. The best fluke action we are hearing of is still in the backwaters behind Stone Harbor, Avalon, and Sea Isle. We've also gotten good reports from the Old Grounds this weekend on fluke and a few nice sea bass. The best sea bass fishing is still on the structure in the 100-120 ft. range. Unless something changes we only have another week to keep sea bass, so now is the time to go. Mako fishing picked up very well this week. The South Jersey Marina Shark Tournament weighed in four makos over 200 lbs. and the winner was a 310 lb fish. Most of the fish were caught between the 20 and 30 fathom line on structure. We are hearing rumors of bluefin showing up on some inshore spots, but can't confirm it. There were some yellowfins caught in the Poormans Canyon this week as well as bigeyes up in the Toms Canyon. Hopefully next week we'll be able to report an inshore bite."
