The 10-fish bag limit season for sea bass concludes Sunday with no sign of diminished abundance. Striped bass have been hard to come by the last few days, but Chuck Many of Annandale didn't forget how to catch them after a spring devoted to his daughter's softball games at Georgia Tech, his son's graduation from Miami, and a family vacation to his roots in Ireland. Two young men who Many had coached in Little League years ago, Curt Hoefig and Greg Sakos from Annandale, were aboard Ty Man from Gateway Marina in Highlands along with John Thomas of Belvidere and I as we ran into rough seas Friday morning due to a southeast wind along with a big swell. Fortunately, Many has places to hide from bad weather and still catch fish. The Hudson River came through for us when lots of bluefish were marked with stripers under them.  A full tank of live bunkers soon disappeared, but the younger anglers did best geetting through to the the bass, and added a couple of smaller ones plus small blues casting Tsunami Shad and Rapala Shad Raps. When it calmed down a bit, we added a couple more bass on dead bunkers in the bay and many more large blues drifting off the tip of Sandy Hook after finding none of the big bass further out. The release count ended up at 15 stripers up to my 38-incher on a chunk plus lots of blues -- and we never felt a drop of all the rain that had been predicted for Friday. Despite Saturday's fog and cool winds, there were some blues located for jigging. The Golden Eagle from Belmar got into some of the 2-to-5-pounders. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant did the same, primarily after 11:30 -- with a high hook of 10. The Wednesday and Thursday Magic Hours trips for big stripers on that boat didn't work out.  There were some large fluke caught today to the north. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands had the RFA charter aboard for decent fishing in the ocean despite the fog and big swell as the bay has been dead for them. Jeff Criswell of Flanders not only boated an 8 3/4-pounder, but added a 5 5/16-pound fluke. Capt. Ron Santee said there was another just under 7 pounds plus a 5-pounder. Capt. Stan Zagleski said he had a good current for drifting that produced some limits on Elaine B. II from Bahrs in Highlands. John Vanderstand of Pompton Lakes caught his limit out of five legal fluke up to a 6 5/16-pounder -- but  John Dec of Kearney took the pool at 8 7/16 pounds. Connor Mangean from Raritan added a 7 7/16-pounder. That boat sails early at 6 a.m. on Sunday. At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reported a 35-inch striper caught from the surf on a bunker chunk was released. Night shark anglers are starting to work the surf, and one reported releasing two small sand tigers. Betty & Nick's reported three bass were chunked in the surf on Friday. Vinnie D'Anton of Wall caught his first keeper bass from the surf since returning from Florida while bait fishing in Spring Lake this week. He expected to find it loaded with crabs and sand fleas, but there was nothing in the stomach of the 30-incher. The surf then got too tough and weedy.
