Though ocean fluke fishing has improved, it still leaves much to be desired as bottom waters haven't warmed at all. Capt. Stan Zagleski, of Elaine B II from Bahrs in Highlands, said his son was diving recently and recorded just 50 degrees in 65 feet. It's no wonder that anglers continue to catch a few ling while fluking. Capt. Scott Hilliard went down the beach on Thursday and watched a customer boat a 10-pound doormat on the first drop from Prowler 5 out of Atlantic Highlands. Bluefish have been scarce, so both the Golden Eagle from Belmar and the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant have concentrated on getting the two sea bass limits for their fares. Some party boats are cancelling their Saturday trips due to the rain possibility. Check with skippers in advance. Tank Matraxia of Lyndhurst made an evening trip on Thursday with Capt. Johnny Contello from Keyport to tag a 44-inch, fork length (as the ALS measures) striper on a live bunker. Other than the 40-pounder, his party only caught a 15-pounder and lost another bass fishing outside of Raritan Bay. Vinnie D'Anton of Wall has been catching some impressive, but ugly stripers this week. Many of the Shark River and nearby surf bass have been covered with red sores, including a 30-incher D'Anton caught on a Chug Bug in the river, and a 30 1/2-incher on sand fleas in the surf. I released a 25 1/2-incher on the tiny crabs Thursday, and it too had the red marks. The bass don't look good, but seem to be feeding well and put up a good fight.  I tried Friday's rough surf briefly, but couldn't raise anything to my popper At Seaside Park, Grumpy's Tackle reports Doylan Mitchell released a 6-foot sand tiger shark at night on a bunker.  There were reports of a big bluefish blitz on bait Thursday morning in Island Beach State Park. Fluking is good in the surf, and crabbing is excellent from docks in town. -
