Party boats have had such a hard time with bluefish lately that they've been quickly switching to sea bass in order to send everyone home with the two allowed. However, there was a surprising showing of big blues this morning off Sea Girt as surfcasters watched dolphins chasing bait along with some large fish. They finally moved in close enough at one point for Phil Silvester to hook and release a jumbo blue he estimated at 15 pounds.  He also snagged an adult bunker with the SP Minnow he was casting. Silvester said that was the only blue caught during the brief flurry. It appears that the party boats missed that rare opportunity as none mentioned it in their reports. Vinny D'Anton of Wall and I were surfcasting a little further north and also saw some dolphins -- but no feeding flurry. He caught a 25-inch striper on a Chug Bug, and I caught an identical bass on my first cast with sand fleas. I should have quit while I was ahead, and no other bass hit fleas being fished by other anglers. D'Anton's bass was clean, but mine had a few of the red spots we've been seeing on most surf bass lately. Jim Lauro of Spring Lake said he caught a 27-inch striper on fleas the previous evening that was covered up with red lesions. The Big Mohawk from Belmar reported improved fluking today, with several limits and a 5-pound pool winner. They sail at 6 a.m. Sunday before returning to 7 a.m. on Monday. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park is still getting reports of big blues in the surf on bait though none have been weighed in. They also noted that fluke are hitting in the surf along with kingfish. Snappers are starting to show up at the docks in town which continue to offer excellent crabbing.
