Then Bob Correll of Bay Head made a late decision to use his Boston Whaler today, I suggested we look for big blues which I heard were being caught the last couple of days to the north. As it turned out they were to the northwest. Though the forecast was for sunny with light northwest winds, there was actually a cool mist that had us wishing for heavier jackets. There was no sign of life all the way until we saw the Jamaica from Brielle head into Raritan Bay -- where the entire bluefish fleet from Belmar to Brooklyn was fishing. The tide was slack, and the cool morning turned to a hot day until birds started picking as the current developed.ed. The fishfinder wasn't working, but Bob had no problem following the visible signs, though we couldn't get a swirl on poppers. Anglers on packed party boats were screaming as the blues turned on to jigs. Our first blues were 5-to-6-pounders, but just before we had to leave them biting {so Bob could get back for a party he was putting on} 8-to-10-pounders started hitting -- even on poppers. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported their blues ranged from 4 to 15 pounds and were caught on Run-Off Hammer and Croc jigs. The Jamaica had a 16-pound pool winner for Jessica Foley of Lakehurst. Most of the catch was from 4 to 8 pounds. We were looking forward to a nice run home in calm seas under the beach with a northwest wind. However, the wind was actually exactly the opposite -- and the southeast made for a long, bumpy ride. The Sandy Hook Bay Anglers Fluke Tournament didn't have an entry at Atlantic Highlands until 1:30, and only 22 fluke were weighed in during the first day. The leading fish is a 9 1/8-pounder by Brian Mackey of Belford. Following are two 6 1/8-pounders; a 6-pounder; two of 4 3/8 pounds; and two of 4 1/4 pounds.  Melissa King of Oxford leads for the woman's rod & reel prize at 3.3 pounds. There should be lots of change on the second day. Brian Dunn got the impression that almost everyone was fishing in the ocean.
