August 3 Association Report

Usually after a northeaster, it takes a few days for fishing to get back to normal. However, following last week’s northeast storm which brought strong winds and heavy showers to Beach Haven, the fishing for the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association has been strong.

Prior to the storm, Captain Jimmy Zavacky fished the White Marlin Tournament sponsored by the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club. Fishing hard for two days the “Reel Determined” struck pay dirt in the Hudson Canyon. Captain Jimmy’s crew managed a pair of yellowfin tuna including a 57.2 pounder that was weighed in for the tournament. The fish fell just short of finishing in the money, but was a good showing for the captain and his party.

Captain Carl Sheppard reports the “Star Fish” is racking up good numbers of fish on her daily trips to the inshore wrecks and reefs. Most of the fish are shorts, but on one trip they ended up with 11 keeper black sea bass and and an 8-pound fluke. On his kids’ trips in the bay Captain Carl has been catching up to 50 fish a day including dogfish, sea robins, small sea bass, and fluke toward the ends of the tides.

Captain Gary Dugan of the “Irish Jig” reports fluke fishing has been very good in the ocean with 6-7 keepers per trip along with many throwbacks. He was caught by surprise when a 4-foot thresher shark was brought to the boat on a fluke rig.

Captain Ray Lopez and mate Max Goldman had a party on a charter who braved it out through a rainstorm on their trip. One keeper fluke was boated along with many throwbacks to keep the anglers busy the whole trip.

Captain John Lewis feels the northeaster helped the fluke bite as his party on Monday boxed 8 nice fluke in addition to some black sea bass and bluefish. The next day he tried a little mid range tuna fishing with the Bond family. They had non-stop action on little tunny along with a 16-pound mahi. They also got a few jumps from a white marlin to round out the day.
