With a forecast of south winds gusting up to 30 mph in the afternoon, only 36 boats entered in the MidAtlantic at Cape May and Ocean City, Md. decided to use one of their three fishing days in the over $3 million contest. There was no movement in the top-paying white marlin category, where Taylor Jean leads with a 72-pounder, but two leaders were toppled. After the first two offshore tournaments of the year failed to produce a single bigeye, Big Dog changed everything in the tuna category by boating a 126-pounder that's now leading for a pay-off of $117,594. Several large yellowfins were also weighed, topped by 71-pounder on Wrecker. The dolphin lead was only at 15 pounds the first day, but Speculator brought in a 23-pounder -- the same as the dolphin that won the White Marlin Open on the last day. There were no wahoo, and the 67-pounder on Contrail is still looking good. Nine blue marlin have been boated so far, but the 400-pound minimum has proven to be too big a hurdle in the first two days. There have been 11 blues released in the first two days. White marlin releases so far are up to 157, while nine were weighed and one was late. The tuna count is up to 27, and dolphin are at 18 with wahoo at one. The top Tuesday release boat was Billfisher with five whites and a blue.
