The Jamaica from Brielle had a good Friday night catch of bluefish up to 8 pounds while chumming. The Jamaica's first trip for canyon tuna didn't produce the targeted species. There had been a daytime bite, but only one tuna was boated along with little tunny. They moved offshore to catch dolphin before anchoring at night for tuna that didn't show -- though there were two stripped reels at 5 a.m. Finishing up with dolphin produced lots of action with fish up to 15 pounds. There  are spaces available on the next canyon trip at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Call 732 528-5014. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported the Skepton Construction charter jigged blues up to 6 pounds today. At Belmar, the Ocean Exploer had lots of porgies along with some triggerfish and blackfish. The Big Mohawk planned to chum for bonito and little tunny on the weekend, but found little interest in that and will be bottom fishing at 7 a.m. Sunday. The Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands reported another day of red hot porgy fishing . The Elaine B, II from Bahrs in Highlands had plenty of porgies, but will be fishing specifically for blackfish at 7 a.m. Sunday. That will basically be a catch-and-release trip to get tuned up for the season as only one tog can be kept at this time, but the regulars on that boat enjoyed such trips last year. Despite the ever-bigger swell, the Seaside Park tackle shops reported a fishable surf. However, the bluefish action continues to be on the bay side with bunker. Tony Arcabascio, of Tony Maja Tackle, caught another big blue from his dock in Bayville this week while fishing a peanut bunker. There wasn't much doing in Point Pleasant Canal for casters this morning, but I saw one blue of about 8 pounds caught, while I lost a similar blue on a 6-inch Tsunami Shad. Blackfishing is the best bet in the canal. Vinny D'Anton of Wall released three small stripers up to 21 inches this morning while casting a jig in Shark River.
