Anglers should get their ocean and beach fishing in quickly as big swells are developing -- with a tropical storm warning likely on Tuesday. That shouldn't bother the party boats on Sunday, but we'll have to keep an eye on developments after that. Even a large swell isn't a problem for large boats as long as long as the waves are spread apart. Capt. Tommy Joseph reported another great day of porgy fishing on his Rightaway from Belmar along with triggerfish and blackfish -- while lots of 2-to-3-pound sea bass were released. He said the trip was comfortable, but the swell was building as he ran back -- and he cancelled for tomorrow into next week. When I mentioned Joseph in Friday's column, I used a previous boat name, Fish Tank, rather than his original and current boat name.j The Golden Eagle from Belmar had another good day of chumming though it was a pick of blues, chub mackerel and little tunny rather than the hot recent bite.  Also at Belmar, the Big Mohawk reported another day of big porgy catches plus triggerfish and tog. Casting at Point Pleasant Canal was poor in the morning, though Joe Melillo, Jr. said he lost a sizable striper on a jig when the hook pulled. His father, got enough green crabs at Castaways Tackle in Point Pleasant to last into Sunday -- and the blackfish continue to bite steadily in the canal even if most of them are shorts. With the fairly light spinning tackle I use, every one puts up a good fight. My largest of 11 quickly caught on green crabs was 14 1/2 inches. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant and Maren Toleno from Mantoloking were also catching tog regularly on both shrimp and green crabs -- and Lasko got rocked out by a bigger fish. Scott Leadbeater of Haddon Heights fished Raritan Bay Friday afternoon with his Osprey from Atlantic Highlands and only found some small blues rather than the hot surface action usually prevailing at this time. Capt. Stan Zagleski sent the following report from Elaine B. II at Bahrs in Highlands that even included catches of tropical porcupinefish.   Togs keep chewing September 16, 2017         "We could not have asked for a nicer day, both weather wise and with the fishing, for the new and veteran EB II fishermen aboard today.  Very good fishing for all with everyone keeping their one nice tog and playing catch and release with lots of other quality fish for another day.  Even the first time youngsters caught keepers.  The guys had some nice trigger fish and a couple of spiny puffer fish for a bit of variety.   Frank Lavelle, Jersey City, NJ, took the pool with a fish around 7 pounds.  Everyone, especially the youngsters, were treated to dozens of porpoises and a couple of whales putting on a show going out and coming home from the grounds.  GOOD weather again for tomorrow so take advantage of it!  "
