It didn't feel like fall today, but the fishing was just what we'd like it to be in the fall when I joined Jim Peters of Manalapan on his Century 32 from Morgan Marina along with Bob Correll of Bay Head and Capt. Joe Massa -- who quickly netted peanut bunkers off Keyport. It turned out that we didn't need those live baits as live eels drifted over marks in the Hudson River soon produced action as I hooked up and so did Correll. Massa netted my fat 33-incher and seconds later scooped up the other bass to lift them both aboard. Correll released his bass that was around legal size. Massa then added a 31-incher, and I released a smaller one before the tide died out. Peters then made a high speed run down to Shrewsbury Rocks where we fished through lots of small sea bass and waited out a blackfish bite that produced a limit of keeper tog which included a 22-inch, 6 1/2-pounder for Massa. I also released a 14-inch grey triggerfish before we ran out of green crabs. A brief attempt for weakfish back in the bay didn't result in any hits, though we did see small little tunny chasing schools of peanut bunkers. Altogether, a fine start to fall fishing even though the air temperature was about 90 degrees and the water 74 degrees off Sandy Hook. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported a very good start with blues on jigs before chumming produced lots of chub mackerel along with some bonito on both bait and jigs. The Ocean Explorer from Belmar got into very good porgy fishing along with some blackfish. The Golden Eagle is offshore on a tuna trip.
