There wasn't much competition on the waters this Columbus Day, but Capt. Dave De Gennaro did give it a brief try on his Hi Flier from Barnegat with Nick Honachefsky aboard.  They just chummed a few small weakfish and snappers with grass shrimp before the wind came on, but prospects in Barnegat Bay for that fishing are good. There was a confirmed report of legal weakfish on the west side where blowfish are also available, and De Gennaro will also bring clams to seek stripers nearer the inlet -- where small blues can be plugged and little tunny have been spotted inside all the way up to the lighthouse. De Gennaro has room on open afternoon trips the next two days. Call 732 330-5674. I doubt that any other boats were fishing today, but tomorrow looks fine with a light NW wind -- and the weekend is shaping up very nicely. Point Pleasant Canal provides some refuge from the weather, but it was actually still very nice there early this morning as I used the last of my dead sandworms to catch short blackfish up to a 14 1/2-incher along with pesky little sea bass. One keeper tog was caught this morning, and an angler told me he got a 16 1/2-incher over the fence yesterday. Adam La Rosa sent the following report from Canyon Runner Charters: Last Minute Weekend Trips Available This Saturday - Sunday Very Rare Open Boat Weekend Trip Last Trip Capt. Deane Was On the Meat Discounted  October Dates Available SATURDAY'S TRIP WITH TOM WILLIAMSON ************************************************** While several trips prior had been slow - Capt. Deane decided to head to the southern canyons with the Tom Williamson charter and once again found the meat.  They spent the afternoon in the Wilmington bailing a limit of dolphin with 60 mahi filling the coolers before moving on to the chunk bite.  Decide to stick with the day time chunk proved the deciding factor.  But before that the night saw multiple swords and sharks and more mahi released.  The morning was when the tuna showed and they had solid action on big yellowfin from 5am on with multiple fish lost and 3 large 70-80 pounders finally falling to the gaff. The party boats got in on the action on the chunk as well with catches of 10-12 fish on a few nights last week getting the party boat fleet, and us, excited!
