1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

Party boats fishing in the ocean today read and saw lots of stripers, but didn't catch very many of the very fussy bass as only trollers seemed  to do well. The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported that the tough fishing continued even after seeing bass on top -- but they're bound to turn on. They'll be sailing at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, and advise anglers to dress warmly for a cold northwest wind. The Queen Mary from Point Pleasant reported the fishing "stunk" today for the same reasons, but the northwest wind on Sunday may turn the bass on as it often does. There was more activity in Raritan Bay, but both the Sea Hunter and the Fishermen reported finding it hard to get bites from stripers feeding under birds. There was some action with shorts plus a few keepers -- and the Sea Hunter also got into big blues. Bob Matthews weighed a 33-pound striper at Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina after it was trolled by Isaac Emberly of Ocean City, N.J. Bob Vitse put a 14-pound, 5-ounce blackfish on the scale after catching it from the Ocean Explorer. That tog should take over first place in that division of The Fisherman magazine's Dream Boat contest. The mention yesterday of the a kid's contest at Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park noted that it was on Sunday, but it actually had already started. The youngster 16 or under weighing the largest striper or blue by 8 p.m. Sunday wins a valuable Tsunami gift package. There weren't any hot surfcasting reports today, but a few small bass seemed to provide a bit of action in many areas from Sandy Hook to Seaside Park. Allen Riley of South Plainfield  fished Sandy Hook on Black Friday and managed to catch a 21-inch striper on an Ultimus white teaser. I assured him that was a big bass compared to most being caught right now. Frank Mc Guire of Woodbridge put in a whole day at Sandy Hook on Friday and finally came up with five "micro bass" between 2:30 and dusk on a 1-ounce white bucktail. Jim Hutchinson Sr. reports for the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association as follows: "The magic word right now for the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association is stripers. Over the past week the bass have been thick to the north of Beach Haven but within easy traveling distance. With the fish slowly working their way southward, the fishing should continue to be good for a while yet. Captain Matt Curtis of "Get Reel" Sportfishing reports solid striped bass fishing both on live bait as well as trolling with most of the fish being caught on bunker spoons. His fish have all been in the 20-40 pound class with the larger fish topping out in the mid 40s. He has one boat docked in Barnegat for the fish as they stay to the north and another down south for when the fish show off Beach Haven. Captain Matt is also excited about the tautog season. Captain Ray Lopez had the Joel Quirk charter out on a striper trip on the "Miss Liane." The crew began live lining spot and almost immediately boated a nice 30-inch fish. Later they did some trolling and had steady action. Captain Gary Dugan reports another great weekend of striper fishing on the "Irish Jig." The crew fished hard last Friday and Saturday with the wind keeping them tied at the dock on Sunday. By the end of the weekend they had finished up with 20 nice stripers boated with limit catches each day along with the dozen big bluefish over the weekend. The "Irish Jig" took 2nd place in the MICA striped bass tournament.
