Lou Feldsott, one of the pioneers in mass merchandising of fishing tackle, passed away on Nov. 28 at the age of 104. Feldsott was born Lou Feldsott, one of the pioneers in the mass merchandising of fishing tackle, passed away on Nov. 28 at 104. A memorial service was held this morning in Paramus for the owner of Folsom Co. , the family-owned wholesale tackle operation that supplies retailers from mom and pop operations to discount stores throughout the area. Born on March 6, 1914 in Pa., Feldsott came to N.Y. to make his fortune. After joining Universal Fishing Tackle, he eventually became president and acquired H & D Folsom Arms Co. in 1954. Folsom Arms later became Folsom Co.  which also got into manufacturing Tsunami fishing tackle and Bimini Bay clothing as well as wholesaling fishing tackle and accessories.  Though Fedsott long ago turned over control of the company to his sons, Edward and Robert, he continued to commute 45 miles to the office up to age 98, and was in the office of the business he loved almost every day until the week before he died. The NW wind forecast must have scared off most party boat anglers, because the Sea Hunter was the only striper boat to get out of Atlantic Highlands. Capt. Rob Semkewyc said it turned out to be the best day of the week, with plenty of shorts, some bonus bass, a good shoring of large keepers, and just a few blues. Bob Matthews sent a report from Fisherman's Den in Belmar Marina noting that there have been big concentrations of bait and stripers in 40-to-70-feet for trolling and jigging, but that surfcasters are only catching small bass. Later he reported that Miss Belmar Princess told him they saw surfcasters into the same 30-inch plus bass they were jigging off Seaside and Island Beach. I got a report of 30-inch bass that were caught in a very brief flurry at Lavallette. Where will the next flurry occur? At least it's encouraging that there have been a few bigger bass in the surf. I only managed one small bass on a Castaways Super Teaser at Brick after dawn, and another on a Tsunami Sand Eel at Sea Girt before dark. Vinny D'Anton of Wall did better with the small bass a bit further north while casting a Mirr-O-lure. Though Bob Correll of Bay Head didn't find any bass at his local beach in the morning, he did have plenty of action with seven large hickory shad.
