Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported Saturday produced the best volume surf fishing of the year at Island Beach State Park though the stripers were all small. They are feeding on sand eels, but hitting a wide range of small lures. Jerry Lasko of Point Pleasant put in another 12-hour day with Maren Toleno of Mantoloking as she released 81 and he totaled 49. The largest of those bass was a 26-incher. It wasn't like that at Sea Girt. I was all alone on the snow-covered beach this morning and only missed one fish that nipped at a 1/4-ounce jig. After giving up on the Giants, I returned at dusk and had no action until a fish hit just a few yards from shore.  With the small bcass you only have to back up to land them, but this one was hard to get through the wash. It turned out to be a fat 26-incher, on a Castaways Super Teaser, which seemed like a monster compared to the mini-bass we've been catching. I then added one of the small bass on the jig before leaving. Not many boats sailed today, but the Ocean Explorer from Belmar reported blackfish were chewing as soon as they anchored up. The high hook had a limit, and everyone had action with a mix of shorts and keepers.
