While there isn't much good news about the fishing, that could change with ideal mid-winter conditions the next two days featuring mild temperatures and light winds.  The Ocean Explorer from Belmar actually found better fishing Friday when anglers in the bow picked some legal blackfish plus one estimated at 13-14 pounds and others that broke off. Whitelegger crabs produced best, and there was also a keeper cod and some shorts. Most surprising was a torpedo ray. The water temperature was 39 to 40 degrees. As noted last night, there was a gusty west wind on Saturday-- though it was dropping off in the afternoon. However, bottom fishing was very slow with just a pick of tog, ling and eels. They'll be trying Sunday in deeper waters in search of outsized tog, and the Big Mohawk will also be sailing at 7 a.m. from Belmar.
