Posted on June 8, 2021 Golofaro wins Lifetime Achievement Award Other awards at last Friday’s Manhattan Cup went to big fish caught by participants, but the greatest applause was when Fred Golofaro was announced as recipient of the Manhattan Cup Lifetime Achievement Award. I had the pleasure, as last year’s honoree, of presenting the longtime editor of The Fisherman, Long Island edition with the well-deserved award. Though we’ve interacted in many causes over the years, I had been unaware of our first meeting when Fred was still in high school but already dedicated to conservation as he joined the Save Our Stripers rally in Albany as the Assembly wasn’t able to vote on the proposed New York striped bass gamefish legislation that had already passed unanimously in the Senate because Assembly Speaker Perry Duryea Jr. (who owned a commercial fishery at Montauk). pulled it off the agenda due to a “printing error” . That was a good lesson in political realities versus democratic standards that would mold his actions as an editor in years to come. Fred likes all kinds of fishing, but his first love is surf fishing — and he’s a real pro on the beach. Digging through some old magazines in my basement, I came across a Fisherman for Sept. 12, 1985 — and found that Fred was not only editor at that time, but he was also second in the New York Surf Fishing Contest at that point with a 46 1/2-pound striper! They’ve added a June 22 evening trip at 4 for a last shot at sea bass before the season ends that night. The marine forecast is for southwest winds at 5-10 knots with a chance of morning showers and afternoon thunder storms.
