1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

Usually I'm complaining about weathermen blowing a forecast, but this time I'm sure happy that I only had to shovel about six inches of snow this morning. That forecast of an historic blizzard wasn't as bad as the day last fall when they were calling for a northwest gale before we woke up to a flat calm. We did get some snow and wind, but it was far from a blizzard. Hopefully there will be some fishing after the seas settle. In the meantime, here's a note about February fishing prospects in the Sebastian area of Florida's east coast from N.J. native Capt. Charlie Fornabio who guides in hat area. February Fishing ForecastThe last couple of Februarys have been fairly mild. Taking advantage of the light wind conditions the last couple of seasons, we have done very well fishing the inshore reefs along the beaches for a variety of species using live shrimp. in water depths ranging from 12-20 feet. Sheepshead, snappers, Spanish mackerel, and blues are readily available within close proximity to the inlets. It is not uncommon for anglers to catch 10 species or more. John Taylor, fishing with his son Buck and grandson Ben, lead the way with a 16 species day, including a 6 pound permit, a few weeks ago. In the river, docks and mangrove shorelines will continue to yield sheepshead, black drum and reds. Depending on the water temperature, the deeper channel edges will produce good catches of sheepshead  and mutton snapper, as well as grouper, pompano, Spanish, jacks and ladyfish. Fishing in deeper water will produce better results on most days. The deeper grass flats both north and south of the inlet will produce trout and pompano, though sometimes it's hard to fight your way through the jacks and ladyfish to get to the more glamorous species. It should be a fun month to bend a rod and get some sun.  I look forward to seeing you soon.
