1000's of NJ Saltwater Fishing Reports, Dozens of Sources, Maps, Wrecks, Historical Search

The Jamaica from Brielle continues to load up on jumbo sea bass and porgies on far offshore trips. I was aboard today and found the fishing to be as advertised. Actually, it started off slowly in the dark when only a few fish were caught in an unexpected 15-to-20 mph wind and a steep swell.  I only hooked a 13-inch sea bass and a bluefish of about 2 pounds before the fishing turned on at full daylight. Bogan worked just one large wreck throughout the trip, adjusting his two anchor lines to cover all of it. Though I fell three bass short of a 15-bass limit, I added 10 porgies up to 16 inches and ended up with two large bags of fillets. My bass ranged up to an impressive 22-incher, but that wasn't in contention for the pool as two larger fish of other species were boated -- a pollock and a white hake. The oddest catch of the day was a fluke well over keeper size that had to go back. Bogan said the fishing wasn't as good as on some other recent trips, but there were some sea bass limits and no one was complaining about a lack of fish. Since the sea bass season closes at the end of the month, Bogan is running every night at 10 p.m., though not this Wednesday or on the Christmas Holidays. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations. There was no positive news from the surf today, and even Vinnie D'Anton of Shark River Hills is wondering if it's all over so early.
