The weather outlook for Tuesday is poor, and both the Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands and the Queen Mary from Point Pleasant have already cancelled their striper trips. Capt. Rob Semkewyc reported good action with shorts today on his Sea Hunter, though the action didn't turn on until 9:30 a.m. at the end and change of the tide. He may fish again on Wednesday, though there could be a big swell from tomorrow. Capt. Dave Riback had a legal bass today on the Queen Mary as Jim Stieves boated a 30-incher while releasing 10 shorts. He'll be sailing Wednesday on Customer Appreciation Day from 6:30 to 1 for a fare of $50 that will include dinner at Farrel's Rest. across from the boat. No reservations are necessary. Allen Riley of South Plainfield fished the Sea Bright surf this morning, and had a hit while plugging in very comfortable conditions before dawn. However, nothing was caught, there was no sign of bait, and there were no birds working offshore. Except for those fortunate enough to have been on the surf when bass pushed bunker in this fall, that fishing has been very poor. Indeed, Riley says "It's been the most disappointing season to work the sand in recent memory: 10 years at least". Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park hasn't had a surf weigh-in for some time, but they report small bass are being caught on lures and clams. The Jamaica from Brielle had good fishing for jumbo sea bass plus porgies on offshore wrecks over the weekend. There was a strong current Sunday, and small blues were a problem at first. Mike Vastolay of Lavallette won Sunday's pool with a 23-pound cod, and Gelu Pislaru from Hopatcong had a 16-pound pollock. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.
