Though there were no good surf reports, some boaters had decent fishing. Capt. Russ Binns tried jigging and casting in a big fleet off Seaside, but didn't do anything except hook a few small stripers before switching to trolling shad rigs. His crew ended up catching four keeper bass -- including two of 16 and 25 pounds. One had big bunkers in its stomach (though they weren't showing), but the fish were primarily feeding on rainfish and 4-inch weaks. Binns said he never saw a bent rod on the beach, and tackle shop reports there were also negative except for night casting. Capt. Joe Massa fished for blackfish at the Apple Pie with his My Three Sons out of Morgan, and reported a four-man catch of 12 tog up to a 6 1/2-pounder despite rough conditions. I cast both morning and evening in the Point Pleasant surf without a hit Capt. Rob Semkewyc did a lot of running with his Sea Hunter from Atlantic Highlands, but the bird life that had been abundant was down. A keeper, a few shorts and some blues were caught.
