Though daytime surfcasting remains very picky, there has been some action with mostly short bass in the dark -- particularly around the high tides. Joe Melillo, at Castaway's Tackle in Point Pleasant, got into a few bass Thursday night at Bay Head, and said everyone fishing from there to Mantoloking seemed to do well on plugs. I fished very briefly at Sea Girt around dusk before rushing back to get my Friday column out. I released a short on an SP Minnow then -- and did the same thing this evening on a Joe Blaze teaser fly. The third straight morning with a gale forecast scared off many boaters, but Capt. Russ Binns of Mar-Lin from Toms River said a friend trolled some bass and blues off the park.
