As if a northeaster and gale warnings aren't bad enough, the thunder and lightning this morning were probably enough to scare off most anglers. There has been good canyon fishing when it's possible get out there. Capt. Bobby Bogan fished the Hudson on Monday with his Gambler from Point Pleasant in 69.5 degree waters with plenty of weed and bait -- squid and chub mackerel.  Though the night bite wasn't fast, they had some yellowfin tuna in the 60-to-70-pound class while boating a 250-pound swordfish and losing a much bigger one after an hour. Bogan finished up with a good catch of dolphin in the morning. He has openings on another trip set for Oct. 29. Leif Pettersen reports that Ben Green of Wayside got into some short stripers late Monday night at Sandy Hook, releasing six from 19 to 25 inches on a white bucktail. Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park had word of some action with both keeper and short stripers in the bay behind Island Beach State Park. The 8th annual High Tides Striper Tournament will be contested on Nov. 8. South Jersey boaters dominate this contest. There was only one northern boat entered last year, and he Instigator finished fifth. The entry fee is $60 per angler, and the northern weigh-in is at Hoffman's Marina in Brielle -- where the mandatory captains meeting will be held on Friday, Nov. 7.
